چکیده

Methods for evaluating soil conditions as influenced by tillage are often limited to analysis of bulk samples. The application of medical computed tomography (CT) to the characterization of tillage effects on soil provides an alternative tool for measurement since it is at a more detailed scale. The objective of this study was to compare soils under conventional and notillage (NT) systems using X-ray CT. Chisel-disk-disk (CDD) conventional tillage and NT systems were compared for a Mexico silt loam (fine, smectitic, mesic Aeric Vertic Epiaqualfs) soil. Five replicate soil cores (75 mm long by 75 mm diameter) were collected from each treatment. Two CT systems were used in this study: a medical CT scanner (MCT, 1 mm thick scans) and an ultra-high resolution CT scanner (UHCT, 0.1 mm thick scans). Significantly higher soil density was found for the NT treatment using the MCT scanner ðP 1⁄4 0:05Þ. Data from the UHCT scanner were used to compare the effects of scan thickness and to evaluate macropore characteristics. Macropore area was significantly higher ðP < 0:001Þ for CDD as compared to the NT treatment: 11 versus 5%. The number of macropores in the CDD treatment were twice those in NT; their perimeter was 62% longer; and their circularity was 94% of that for pores from the NT tillage treatment. The macropore boxcounting fractal dimension (D) was significantly greater ðP < 0:001Þ for CDD ðD 1⁄4 1:44Þ as compared to the NT treatment ðD 1⁄4 1:26Þ, reflecting the greater space-filling behavior of the CDD treatment. This study shows that the UHCT scanner can characterize differences in soil macroporosity more precisely than standard MCT scanners. The use of ultra-high resolution tomography can aid in the discrimination of differences between seedbeds created by different tillage systems. # 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Calibration and Evaluation of Subsurface Drainage Component of RZWQM V.2.5

This study was designed to calibrate and evaluate the subsurface drain flow component of the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM; Version 2.5) for four tillage-systems: chisel plow (CP), moldboard plow (MB), no-tillage (NT), and ridge-tillage (RT). Measured subsurface drain flow data for 1990 was used for model calibration. Main parameters calibrated were lateral saturated hydraulic conductivi...

بررسی اثرات کوتاه مدت کم خاک‌ورزی بر پایداری ساختمان خاک‌های شمال خوزستان تحت تأثیر رطوبت و بافت خاک

Extensive tillage leads to the degradation of soil structure and aggregate stability. The effects of three different tillage implements including (combination tillage, chisel packer and disk), three levels of soil water content including (0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 plastic limit), three working speeds including (6, 8 and 10 km/hr) and two soil textures including (loam and silty clay loam soils) were stud...

Tillage and crop residue effects on soil carbon and carbon dioxide emission in corn-soybean rotations.

Soil C change and CO2 emission due to different tillage systems need to be evaluated to encourage the adoption of conservation practices to sustain soil productivity and protect the environment. We hypothesize that soil C storage and CO2 emission respond to conservation tillage differently from conventional tillage because of their differential effects on soil properties. This study was conduct...
